There are two problems with the current cartopy example: - The image array is plotted upside-down, with the data row that holds latitude 50° at the bottom, rather than the top, of the image. This isn't immediately obvious because of the random data. - The image isn't shown in a true map projection, even Plate Carrée, since the aspect ratio isn't held constant.

Current image:

Same image with a true Plate Carrée projection:

(the default colormap has changed from jet as well, which is all to the good.)

Both of these issues can be fixed by passing the arguments origin='upper', aspect='equal' to the plot() method. I have a slightly different fix which uses a more interesting map projection to better show off using Cartopy to do the plot. A PR will be forthcoming.

Update cartopy example to use orthographic projection rather than (incorrect) Plate Carrée.

Also correctly orients the data array. I took a notch out of the top right corner of the array so that it can (barely) be seen to have the right orientation.

New, improved example image:

Fixes #513.

The CF conventions link in the FAQ is broken. This updates it to the standard location at http://cfconventions.org, which should be kept up to date.
