And of course, #5364 doesn’t do anything with test_interpolate_1d[1-x-linear]

Right. But it's somewhat strange that only that test and not all the others fail (which also use scipy.interpolate without importing it directly, e.g. test_interpolate_1d[0-x-linear]), so this could also indicate an issue with your environment.

Well, it seems more like a workaround than a solution, but be it.

My point (completely irrelevant to this issue) is that I haven’t seen anywhere the real analysis what is wrong with the original command, and the assertion was just loosened to make the test pass without it. But it really doesn't matter for me.
