There might be a better way to handle this in xarray (maybe we should raise an informative error?) but unfortunately the pandas.MultiIndex.get_loc_level method that we use here does not support approximate indexing: https://github.com/pandas-dev/pandas/blob/v0.24.2/pandas/core/indexes/multi.py#L2438
