I'm running into this issue too with Python 3.7.6, Pandas 1.0.5, and xArray 0.16.1. While updating the documentation to indicate that nearest selection doesn't work on MultiIndex would be great, is there a path towards implementing this feature?

I just hit this error and agree we need at least a better error message / documentation.

There might be a better way to handle this in xarray (maybe we should raise an informative error?) but unfortunately the pandas.MultiIndex.get_loc_level method that we use here does not support approximate indexing: https://github.com/pandas-dev/pandas/blob/v0.24.2/pandas/core/indexes/multi.py#L2438
