Wasn't this dataset that was the root cause for my issues, was a rogue set() that changed orders... <s>I see now that the values that are randomized are converted to strings anyway so it doesn't matter if it's random or not.</s> The coords are converted to strings, but A and B uses the randomized values, so still relevant.

We can merge this anyway the mypy issues was real and using the default_rng follows numpys recommendations better.
