This seems no longer to be true in the most recent version. Instead I am forced to write the first slice without append_dim at all, and then I can loop and append to the zarr I have already written. This is not a satisfying solution to me, but I will close this issue since it is no longer a good description of what happens with the append_dim option.

I agree that the docs do not seem up-to-date. There are a lot of references to color (which isn't relevant), and it would be nice if it was clear how the arrow-length is set. But this function is very nice and the tutorial entry is pretty good. cc @dcherian
