It's private API, but you can import FILE_CACHE from xarray.backends.file_manager. You can just delete entries from that mapping (e..g, using del) -- the files will be automatically closed.

2595 is experiment to close files automatically when referencing objects are garbage collected, which feels like a generally good to idea to him. But it doesn't seem to passing on Travis (it works on my Macbook) -- RasterIO tests are stalling out.
