The idiomatic way to write this is ds['time'] = local_ds.time, though ds.merge(local_ds) should also work.

Please check your version of xarray (xarray.__version__) and make sure you're running xarray 0.8.2. xray is the old name of the library, stuck permanently at version 0.7.0.
