Unfortunately, the data is stored in byte and I remember having error message when using engine="netcdf4" which doesn't support bytes apparently and suggests using "h5netcdf".

I'm afraid you're right the issue is on h5netcdf side as I've tried some of the solution you provided without success, I'll try the rest of them - I guess I'll post an issue on h5netcdf repo
