I like the idea of moving this to test_label_from_attrs seems to be a lot of similar tests there.

Can we skip this entire file if matplotlib is not installed?

I would say we can because at the moment plotting requires matplotlib to be installed. That might change with the introduction of plotting backends (e.g. #3640), but then we'd probably have to refactor the tests (and xarray.plot), anyways.

Sorry, my mistake. I should've manually checked the min deps test too.

  1. Can we skip this entire file if matplotlib is not installed? cc @keewis

On my end I think this idea is fine! Although I don't really understand why matplotlib would be needed for that test in the first place. Sorry to have inadvertently introduced a failing test.
