And one point to add, @raybellwaves — DataArray.to_dataframe has been added, so there's no need to go via a Dataset (which IIRC was the case prior).

We should probably also remove the context on the error message, so we don't see the caught KeyError, i.e., raise ValueError(...) from None.

to_pandas() has the invariant that it returns an object with the same shape as the original, which is different from to_dataframe(). So I don't think we want to convert it automatically.

That said, we should improve this error message by mentioning to_dataframe() as an alternative.
