Sorry this never got a response @cjbraun , especially as IIRC you had some good contributions to xarray.

This does look like a bug. At first glance, it looks like we're not handling that datatype correctly, since we can't pass it to np.dtype:

Probably we should interpret anything we can't convert there as an object. We'd definitely take a PR for this.
