python T = xr.open_dataset('ORCA025-test.nc').thetao.isel(deptht=0) T.plot(x='nav_lon', y='nav_lat')

(i.e. no pcolormesh) should also work. plot does call squeeze but the explicit plotting functions probably should, too.

This still feels like a bug to me. Xarray should be smart enough to squeeze out any singleton dimensions.

Thanks, adding time_counter=0 works!

Does the same thing happen if you squeeze out the time coordinate by doing python T = xr.open_dataset('ORCA025-test.nc').thetao.isel(deptht=0, time_counter=0) ?
