@DancingQuanta someone pointed me towards this issue — did you happen to make any progress on this / post an issue on scipy?

As per your issue, while this isn't an ideal workaround, this does work:

I think the source of the problem here is actually the call to broadcast_like(), which makes a readonly view.

It is pretty common for Cython functions to (incorrectly) insist on being able to write to arrays, even if they don’t actually modify their inputs. Most likely scipy could be updated to fix this issues.
