@perrette In fact, I think I did define ds.dims = newdims for data arrays, although now that I check I'm not sure it's doing a very intuitive operation (currently it does a rename but doesn't let you change coordinate values). But I'd like to have a more general solution that (a) does not involve an in-place modification and (b) also works on datasets.

Talking without having looked much how this is done internally in xray yet, but I find a syntax:

ds.dims = newdims

relatively intuitive for a start. Even though it involves providing all dimensions when only one might be needed. It is one function less to remember.
