Whoa, well I suppose that explains why we can't use xarray.open_mfdataset to open more than a week's worth of these files then. They contain 250+ variables.

I guess what I'm looking for is a way to provide a list of variables to the function, and for 'minimal' to include only the dimension variables relevant to the variables I'm interested in.

So does that mean that all the variables in the files will be concatenated, regardless if I specify which ones I want? I feel like I'm misunderstanding what is included by default.

Yes, that's right.

xarray.concat is a little confusing because it combines functionality from two NumPy functions, np.concatenate and np.stack.
