@jhamman Thanks for you suggestion, but I think it is equivalently easy to write ds = xray.open_dataset('mydata.nc').load_data() -- and that way we don't need to add another argument to open_dataset.

You may also consider including a load_into_memory (or equivalent) keyword in xray.open_dataset.
