OK, I think dask array needs some way to check for masked dask arrays prior to compute time before we can do anything sane with them. I opened https://github.com/dask/dask/issues/2977 to discuss.

Not with the current design, no. However, most ma methods are idempotent, so calling ma.masked_invalid on an already masked array will result in no changes.
