Thanks @shoyer , sorry for my late answer. Both are installed via pip on linux, and both are manylinux wheels: - netCDF4-1.2.7-cp35-cp35m-manylinux1_x86_64.whl - h5py-2.7.0-cp35-cp35m-manylinux1_x86_64.whl

I don't use h5py often enough to bother looking deeper into this. I'll close this now as irrelevant for xarray.

How did you install h5py/netCDF4-python and their binary dependencies? My guess is that this is actually a packaging issue (e.g., the netCDF libraries are linked to a different version of HDF5 than h5py).
