@margocrawf - thanks for opening this bug report and for providing a complete example demonstrating the issue. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), running your example does not reproduce the same error for me. I have a few questions:

  1. Can you add the full output of show_versions? In particular, make sure to include Zarr.
  2. Have you tried swapping Zarr for the netcdf4 backend?
  3. Are you able to try with a separate environment? If so, try your example above with the latest versions of Xarray/Pandas/Numpy/Zarr and report back if the same issue exists.
