It has to look exactly like the output dataset prior to computing (just constructed with dummy values)

Just tagging on here to say that I had a go at using map_blocks yesterday and found the requirements for the template argument a bit unclear. The documentation should say

a) what type of data is expected (in-memory vs lazy dask) b) what coordinates and indexes are required c) names d) chunking structure as above

I'm happy to contribute to this but probably only after SciPy :sweat_smile:

template.chunks is None. It needs to have the expected output chunking.

A PR raising a nice error message here when if not template.chunksizes: would be very welcome

We can also delete the if clause here:https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/ce40b9391a996b8218e1c7b1e83905b8dd4bc1fd/xarray/core/parallel.py#L383-L388

and use the new chunksizes property: output_chunks = template.chunksizes

{

    "+1": 0,
