Got it. For anyone who faces the same issue, here's a workaround: downgrade your xarray, read the data and then convert it to dict using .to_dict.

Netcdf didn't work because each item in my DataArray is a tuple of lists, and all lists have different lengths. I had the setting an array element ith a sequence error.
