pickle should never be used, with any library, as a means of long-term storage because it intrinsically relies on implementation details to remain the same across versions. Please use one of the several tools that are made just for that purpose (NetCDF et al.). xarray already guarantees stability on the public API - we typically have a deprecation cycle lasting at least 1 major version. It will never offer stability on the implementation details.

From the xarray docs:

Restoring a pickle requires that the internal structure of the types for the pickled data remain unchanged. Because the internal design of xarray is still being refined, we make no guarantees (at this point) that objects pickled with this version of xarray will work in future versions.
