You should probably wait until I finish my overlapping reorganization of xray internals in #648, but this would be pretty straightforward to add. Basically, the _align_variables routine should be updated to first iterate through and convert any pandas Series, DataFrame or Panel objects into xray.DataArray.

I would be in favor of your option 2 -- wrapping pandas objects inserted into xray Datasets with the DataArray constructor.
