The cftime plotting test failures -- that I think are related to the latest matplotlib -- are indeed fixed with the development version of nc-time-axis (#5744). I suspect SciTools/nc-time-axis#78, which made the datetime converting logic more robust to different kinds of sequences, helped there. Plans are in the works to make a new nc-time-axis release soon, so hopefully we'll be able to stay out ahead of these matplotlib updates.
