Thanks for the report @juseg. It looks like the logic here needs to be updated: https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/ff6051de5fa61f1e371dea1eaba8edd09288b8d1/xarray/plot/plot.py#L300-L323

Note that the 2D plotting functions do this: https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/ff6051de5fa61f1e371dea1eaba8edd09288b8d1/xarray/plot/plot.py#L697-L698

This should be relatively easy fix if you're up for it.
