We have a bit of logic vaguely like this inside xarray's plotting methods: https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/c33dab237a0aca316b7f6d4ba10857829a895a25/xarray/plot/utils.py#L624

This feels a padding operation. I don't think we have an equivalent of np.pad in xarray but that would probably be a reasonable addition.
