I cannot reproduce this with a dataset with decreasing latitude

Maybe a MPL version issue? Because our docs are also afffected, see: - http://xarray.pydata.org/en/stable/plotting.html#two-dimensions - http://xarray.pydata.org/en/latest/plotting.html#two-dimensions
