You can also set xarray options without using a context manager, e.g., python xr.set_options(diverging_cmap='RdYlBl', nondiverging_cmap='magma') So I think this would work for your use case of updating defaults for all plots in a notebook.

Take a look at https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/master/xarray/core/options.py for where we implement options. You would need to then use them in xarray.plot.utils: https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/e5ae4088f3512eb805b13ea138087350b8180d69/xarray/plot/utils.py#L206-L211
