This works now (tested with xarray v0.9): In [7]: s.to_xarray().indexes['foo'] Out[7]: CategoricalIndex(['a', 'a', 'b', 'b', 'c'], categories=['a', 'b', 'c'], ordered=False, name='foo', dtype='category')
