Under "Creating a Data Array" and next to the subitem "coords", it is written, that you can use a dictionary like {'coo1': [1,2,3], 'coo2': ['a', 'b', 'c'], ...}, so you can later skip the "dims"

Are you referring to this page? Per this documentation page, dims are only inferred from coords when coords is a list of tuples.

dims: a list of dimension names. If omitted and coords is a list of tuples, dimension names are taken from coords.

So, I'd say that the ValueError you get when using coords defined in a dictionary without specifying dims isn't really a bug.

But when I tried this, I get the message, that using a dictionary for coords is outdated.

What do you think it should return?
