The documentation should say 

a) what type of data is expected (in-memory vs lazy dask)
b) what coordinates and indexes are required
c) names
d) chunking structure as above

I'm happy to contribute to this but probably only after SciPy :sweat_smile:

A PR raising a nice error message here when `if not template.chunksizes:` would be very welcome
