My only suggestion would be to implement your fix at a higher level in the call stack, e.g. by converting the input `calendar` to lowercase within [`xarray.coding.times.decode_cf_datetime`](https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/ba47216ec1cd2f170fd85a10f232be7bf3ecc578/xarray/coding/times.py#L208-L257) before using it anywhere else.
