I had this issue: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/38564507/ipython-pylab-matplotlib-installation-and-initialization-error as well as drawing libpng from the `r` channel.  Following a clean install everything checked out, thankfully.  Even though conda / brew makes life easier, there still can be classic linux-esq dependency issues apparently.

This is all ok now.  Sorry to trouble you on this and I'm really glad to see it wasn't an issue with xarray.
